Why Artificial Dyes Are Outdated: A Look at Food Laws, Energy Drinks, and Our Clean Energy Alternative

Artificial food dyes are prevalent in many processed foods and beverages, including breakfast cereals and energy drinks. Recent legislative actions and consumer advocacy have intensified scrutiny of these additives, leading to significant changes in the food industry.

Kellogg's Cereals and Legislative Actions in California and Texas

In October 2024, protesters gathered at WK Kellogg Co.'s headquarters in Michigan, demanding the removal of artificial dyes from cereals like Froot Loops and Apple Jacks. These cereals contain synthetic dyes such as Red 40, Yellow 5, Yellow 6, and Blue 1, which have been linked to behavioral issues in children. Notably, Kellogg's uses natural color alternatives in countries like Canada but continues to use artificial dyes in U.S. products.

Legislative actions have followed these concerns. California's Governor Gavin Newsom signed the California School Food Safety Act, banning six food dyes, including those found in Froot Loops, from being served in public schools. This makes California the first U.S. state to implement such a ban.

In Texas, advocates have pushed for similar measures. During a Texas Senate Committee on Health and Human Services meeting, testimony was given urging the state to ban cereals containing artificial dyes from public schools, citing health concerns and the availability of safer alternatives used in other countries.

Artificial Dyes in Energy Drinks

Artificial dyes are also common in energy drinks, contributing to their vibrant colors. The top three artificial food dyes—Red 40, Yellow 5, and Yellow 6—constitute 90% of all food dye usage in the U.S. These dyes are prevalent in beverages like juices, energy drinks, and sports drinks.

Some energy drink brands have responded to consumer demand for cleaner ingredients by eliminating artificial colors. For instance, certain varieties of C4 Energy Drinks are marketed as containing no artificial colors or dyes.
